In a special edition of the American Journal of Psychiatry, neuroscientists examine mental and emotional states that were previously consider the domain of psychology, religious studies, philosophy, and anthropology. Based on their own laboratory studies using brain imaging techniques, the contributors discuss topics such as the emotional self and the brain correlates to religious feelings.
