Planning for the care and nurturing of a healthy baby begins before conception. Maternal nutritional deficiencies increase the risk of physical and cognitive deficiencies in the developing child. Micronutrients play a significant role in the immediate health of the fetus, in the future health and success of the child and ultimately, the adult the child will become. The benefits of synergistic nutrients from whole foods as well as the essential nutrients that must be supplemented are important for maternal education. Health care professionals must incorporate full nutritional education in order to promote optimal health for mother and infant.
