Origins of Tibetan medicine is traced back the Bon religion, Chinese medicine, Ayurveda and Buddhist philosophy. The Tibetan medicine consists of the basic and the explanatory tantras. There are eight branches of medicine. The basic three humoral theory and the five elements are at the core. Extensive use of metaphors and medical illustrations are an important aspect of Tibetan medicine. Human body is revealed under seven headings, embryology, similes of body, anatomy, physiology, classifications, functions of the body and signs of death.
