Reviews the book, Burnout: The Cost of Caring by Christina Maslach (1982). Burnout is one of the new "catchwords" that has reached fad proportions not only in the popular media but in the professional literature as well. The author explains what burnout is, identifies sources of burnout in work, self, and family, describes how it may be monitored and how it may be "cured", and, finally, discusses prevention. The book certainly has an occupational flavor. It is timely in an era when increasing numbers of worker disability claims are being filed based on psychological disturbances much akin to the burnout syndrome.
