This article discusses the role of mindful modalities, including mindfulness meditation and yoga, in relieving the pressures of stress and obstacles in public health. The increase in public health agencies actively engaging in health management has implemented systems to prevent chronic disease. Tools include monitoring trends and progress through epidemiology and surveillance; promote quality clinical care; and link community programs with clinical services. Research has certainly demonstrated that these softer skills are impacted positively by mindfulness. However, it could be that the best way to incorporate these practices into the daily activities of our community members is by attaching them to specific health outcomes, like weight loss and mental well-being. Widespread promotion of mindfulness, when used in conjunction with guidelines and a team-based approach to prevention and clinical care, can be a powerful addition to the 21st century public health toolbox.
