The article reports on the introduction of a state-of-the-art mammography machines into the developing country of Nepal. The objective of this case study is to evaluate the use of this machine in the context of a western medical system that is significantly under-developed in terms of its extent and institutionalization. The particular case selected for the study is appropriate because the various ways in which the machine can be used reflect the differences between a highly institutionalized, resource-rich environment and an environment in which the medical system is poorly established and resource poor.
