Abstract:
(Show)
Saussurea eopygmaea (Compositae) is used in Tibetan medicine to treat diseases such as jaundice, diarrhea, and fever. An 95% EtOH extract of the plant was cytotoxic to S-180 sarcoma and Ehrlich ascites carcinoma cells. The CHCl3-soluble fraction was further shown to have in vivo activity against both solid and ascites tumours (S-180 sarcoma and Ehrlich carcinoma). From the active fraction, two cytotoxic sesquiterpene lactones were isolated and identified to be cynaropicrin and desacylcynaropricrin. Also obtained was an inactive coumarin, scoparone.
