Abstract: (Show)

The article classifies two complementary orientations in early Buddhism. The first, labeled as shamanic, is characteristic of small-scale preliterate societies and is aimed at attaining Buddhahood. The other, which the text calls clerical, is common in more centralized states and is concerned more with describing and analyzing the attainment of Buddhahood. (Mark Premo-Hopkins 2004-03-23)
