This article presents findings from a year-long multilevel comparative case study exploring the characteristics of effective urban high schools. We developed a comprehensive framework from the school effectiveness research that guided our data collection and analysis at the four high schools. Using value-added methodology, we identified two higher and two lower performing high schools in Broward County, Florida. We found that the two higher performing high schools in the study had strong and deliberate structures, programs, and practices that attended to both students' academic and social learning needs, something we call "Personalization for Academic and Social Emotional Learning". Because of the study's inductive focus on effectiveness, we follow our findings with a discussion of theories and prior research that substantiate the importance of schools' attention to the connection between students' academic and social emotional learning needs in high schools.

CBT evolved from treating individual disorders with single protocols to embracing a modular and transdiagnostic approach. Despite this impressive evolution, CBT initiated a revolution that continues to provide services to patients in this new era. CBT must maintain momentum to fuel progress and drive clinical reform. In this article, the need for training and dissemination are discussed. Revolutionary practices and delivery methods are suggested. CBT continues to push the envelope of revolution by partnering with neuroscience to bridge the gap between brain and body. Integrating findings from neuroscience with CBT-spectrum approaches and non-traditional treatment formats provides theoretical flexibility and additional treatment options for clinicians. Culturally-friendly applications to treat diverse youth and the use of common modules from third wave approaches are suggested. The use of technology such as smartphones, computers, and videogames is encouraged. Offering treatment in non-traditional settings and formats such as CBT-based camp programs is also addressed.

The use of indicators to gauge human progress is common and well understood; Gross Domestic Product and the Index of Leading Economic Indicators are two well-known examples. Yet most of the widely cited indicators focus exclusively on economic activity, and even the most progressive of indicators fail to account for key issues of sustainability. The Wellbeing of Nations addresses that shortcoming by combining indicators of human well-being with those of environmental stability to generate a more comprehensive picture of the state of our world.The author combines 39 indicators of health, population, wealth, education, communication, freedom, peace, crime, and equity into a Human Wellbeing Index, and 39 indicators of land health, protected areas, water quality, water supply, global atmosphere, air quality, species diversity, energy use, and resource pressures into an Ecosystem Wellbeing Index. It is well understood that wilderness expeditions improve well-being; however, there is little supporting quantitative data. The aim of this study was to measure the impact of wilderness expeditions on self-esteem (SE) and connectedness to nature (CN) and assess whether benefits varied according to participant and expedition characteristics. SE and CN were assessed pre? and post?wilderness expeditions in 130 adolescents using Rosenberg?s SE scale and the state CN scale. Two-way ANOVA revealed significant increases in SE and CN (p < .001) as a result of single expeditions. There was also an interaction effect of expedition and gender on SE (p < .05). Males had a higher SE at the start but female SE increased most. Linear regression revealed that living environment, gender, and the length and location of the expedition did not contribute to changes in SE and CN. Regular contact with natural environments will improve adolescent well-being, with the largest improvements in females.
The concept of self-actualization is a complex one that is widely used in humanistic psychology. Maslow (1968) developed the concept of self-actualization to represent a positive ideal of mental health. It has been suggested that leisure experiences can contribute to the development of self-actualization in an individual. This suggestion has been made most often about outdoor recreation such as wilderness use (e.g., Scott 1974). The purpose of the present study is to provide an empirical test of the prediction that wilderness users are more self-actualized than non-users and that frequent wilderness users are more self-actualized than occasional users. Data were collected from a random sample of 503 adults in Illinois and 222 wilderness users. Wilderness use and attitudes were related to a measure of self-actualization. Wilderness users were found to be more self-actualized than non-users and potential users were more self-actualized than potential non-users. Self-actualization was also found to be positively related to wilderness attitudes. However, frequent wilderness users were no more self-actualized than occasional wilderness users. Wilderness may be used by some individuals as a self-actualizing experience. However, it was concluded that for representative groups of people the relationship between wilderness use and self-actualization is very weak.
