Providing an overview of Integral Ecology, this article defines and explains some of the key terms and concepts that underlie an approach to the environment that is inspired by and makes use of Ken Wilber's Integral Theory. First Integral Ecology is distinguished from other environmental approaches. Then Wilber's Integral Theory is introduced, which provides a foundation for a participatory approach to ecology. Next, the ontology, epistemology, and methodology of environmental phenomena is examined in light of Wilber's framework and illustrated with multidimensional examples of recycling. Finally, an Integral Ecology platform is presented.

The educational challenges being faced today are driving us toward a new step in the evolution of educational theory and practice. Educators are called to go beyond simply presenting alternatives, to integrating the best of mainstream and alternative approaches and taking them to the next level. Integral ecology is a comprehensive framework for characterizing ecological dynamics and resolving environmental problems. It is comprehensive in that it both draws upon and provides a theoretical scheme for showing the relations among a variety of different methods, including those at work in the natural and social sciences, as well as in the arts and humanities. Integral ecology unites, coordinates, and mutually enriches knowledge generated from different major disciplines and approaches. Inte-gral ecology can be: a) applied within a discipline (e.g., by integrating various schools of ecology); b) applied as amulti disciplinary approach (e.g., by investigating ecological problems from severaldisciplines); c) applied as an inter disciplinary approach (e.g., by using social science methods to shedlight on economic or political aspects of environmental values); and d) applied as a trans disciplinaryapproach (e.g., by helping numerous approaches and their methodologies interface through a wellgrounded meta-framework).
