<p>The article attempts to determine the varied meanings of the Tibetan word <em>khrom</em>, which has been translated as "mart, town, city, ville, or population." An attempt is also made to arrive at an understanding of the place that khrom held in the organization of the Tibetan Empire in the 7th-9th centuries.</p>
<p>This article looks at documents dealing with three political formations along the silk route in the 9th-11th centuries. These are 1) the Kuei-i-chün (Army of the Return of Justice) of Sha-chou, 2) the Uighur Khaganate of Kan-chou, and 3) the Kingdom of Khotan. (Mark Premo-Hopkins 2004-07-13)</p>
