This study examined the relation between mindfulness, sexist motivations and beliefs, and prejudice toward women who violate traditional gender roles—namely feminists. In a preliminary study, 672 (251 men, 421 women) undergraduates from a United States Midwestern university completed a measure of mindfulness and warmth toward feminists and consistent with hypotheses, more mindfulness was associated with more warmth toward feminists. Extending this initial finding to the main study, 653 (273 men, 380 women) undergraduates from a U.S. Midwestern university completed measures of mindfulness, motivation to respond without sexism, ambivalent sexism, and warmth toward feminists. Consistent with hypotheses, compared to women participants, men participants were lower on internal motivation to respond without sexism, higher on hostile and benevolent sexism and less warm toward feminists. Also consistent with hypotheses, for men participants, more mindfulness was associated with higher internal motivation to respond without sexism, less benevolent sexism, and more warmth toward feminists. In contrast, for women participants, more mindfulness was only associated with less hostile sexism. Finally, a path analysis revealed that the positive relation between mindfulness and warmth toward feminists for men participants was partially mediated by more internal motivation to respond without sexism (i.e., a significant indirect effect), but not by less sexist beliefs. Implications for mindfulness, sexism, and prejudice more generally are discussed.

The flow construct has recently been proposed as essential to understanding consumer navigation behavior in online environments. We review definitions and models of flow, and describe an empirical study which measures flow in terms of respondents’ skills and challenges for using the World Wide Web. Skills and challenges are shown to correlate in anticipated ways with scales measuring constructs of flow, control, arousal, and anxiety that underlie previous models of flow. By taking the sum and difference of skills and challenges as axes of a two dimensional space, we derive a simple conceptualization of flow. The sum and difference of skills and challenges for using the Web relates in hypothesized ways to measures of consumer search and purchase behavior in online and traditional media.

AIM: This paper reports a systematic review and critical appraisal of the evidence on the effectiveness of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction for cancer supportive care. BACKGROUND: The experience of cancer can have a negative impact on both psychological and physical health and on quality of life. Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction is a therapy package that has been used with patients with a variety of conditions. In order to draw conclusions on its effectiveness for cancer patients, the evidence requires systematic assessment. METHODS: A comprehensive search of major biomedical and specialist complementary medicine databases was conducted. Additionally, efforts were made to identify unpublished and ongoing research. Relevant research was categorized by study type and appraised according to study design. Clinical commentaries were obtained for each study and included in the review. RESULTS: Three randomized controlled clinical trials and seven uncontrolled clinical trials were found. A lack of relevant qualitative research studies was identified. Studies report positive results, including improvements in mood, sleep quality and reductions in stress. A dose-response effect has been observed between practice of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and improved outcome. A number of methodological limitations were identified. Modifications to the traditional Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction programme make comparison between studies difficult and a lack of controlled studies precludes any firm conclusion on efficacy. CONCLUSION: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction has potential as a clinically valuable self-administered intervention for cancer patients. Further research into its efficacy, feasibility and safety for cancer patients in the nursing context is recommended.

The impact of living with metastatic breast cancer (MBC) is considerable and psychosocial support can be beneficial. Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) can help self-management of anxiety, depression, quality of life (QoL), and fatigue and has been evaluated in early-stage breast cancer but not MBC. This study investigated the acceptability and feasibility of providing MBSR for women with MBC and of introducing MBSR into a National Health Service (NHS) setting. A mixed methods convergent design was used. Eligible women with MBC, an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) score of 0 to 2, stable disease, and life expectancy of at least 6 months were invited to attend (by their oncologist) an 8-week MBSR course. Qualitative interviews with patients, a focus group, and interview with NHS staff were held to explore acceptability and feasibility of MBSR. Questionnaires at baseline, during (weeks 4, 8), and after (weeks 16, 24) the course measured fatigue, anxiety and depression, mindfulness, disease-specific QoL, and generic preference based QoL. Of 100 women approached, 20 joined the study. One woman dropped out prior to the intervention due to illness progression. Nineteen women took part in 3 MBSR courses. Recruitment to 2 of the 3 courses was slow. Commitment to 8 weeks was a reason for non-participation, and proved challenging to participants during the course. Participants found the course acceptable and reported many cumulative and ongoing benefits. These included feeling less reactive to emotional distress and more accepting of the disruption to life that occurs with living with MBC. There was high attendance, completion of course sessions, adherence to home practice, excellent follow-up rates, and high questionnaire return rates. MBSR was acceptable to MBC patients, who perceived benefits such as improved anxiety and QoL; but the MBSR course requires a considerable time commitment. There is scope to tailor the intervention so that it is less intensive.

The categorical view of mental illness, which implies the existence of discrete neuropsychiatric disorders that are distinguishable from each other as well as from the healthy state, is evolving into a more realistic “dimensional” view. The dimensional view explains neuropsychiatric symptoms in terms of natural phenotypical variance along certain independent dimensions that are continuous with “normal.” This view can account for the comorbidity and extensive symptom sharing that is observed among categorically defined disorders. Classic animal models of neuropsychiatric disorders—very much in line with the categorical model of psychopathology—explicitly or implicitly attempt to replicate the human disorder in the animal subject, and the validity of the model hinges on how closely the animal model match the human condition. As the conceptualization of mental illness shifts from categorical to dimensional, approaches to animal modeling of mental illness must also change. Dimensional approaches to animal modeling include the “domain interplay” approach proposed by Kalueff and colleagues (Kalueff et al., 2008a, Kalueff et al., 2008b, LaPorte et al., 2010), the “behavioral domain” approach proposed by Kas and colleagues (Kas et al., 2007, Kas et al., 2009, Kas et al., 2011). A common theme running through these newer ideas is that psychopathology represents dysfunction in specific cognitive, emotional, or behavioral domains (such as fear and stress responsiveness, motivation, hedonic capacity, and social interaction). These domains comprise adaptive responses and behaviors that are conserved among mammalian and nonmammalian species. Identifying the genetic and environmental factors associated with phenotypic variation within these domains should provide clues to understanding the etiology of neuropsychiatric disorders. Likewise, the “domain interplay” approach aims to identify factors that are associated with dysfunction in multiple domains and those that underlie the tendency for certain domain dysfunctions to co-occur. This chapter provides an overview of the natural history of the laboratory mouse and rat, emphasizing how domestication has altered some behavioral characteristics, while other behaviors have remained unchanged. An understanding of rodent behavior in natural conditions can provide new insights into laboratory rodent behavior and suggest alternative interpretations of the results that are obtained in standard behavioral tests. Factors responsible for individual differences in personality traits are likely to overlap with those that confer vulnerability to mental illness, so the study of individual differences in “animal personality” is highly relevant to understanding psychopathology. One basic stable personality trait, coping style, is strongly associated with behavioral responses in several tests that are relevant to modeling neuropsychiatric disorders. The proactive coping style is associated with decreased behavioral and cognitive flexibility, decreased immobility in the forced swim tests, susceptibility to learned helplessness, and susceptibility to developing stereotypies. The reactive coping style is associated with increased behavioral and cognitive flexibility, increased immobility in the forced swim test, and increased avoidance behavior in approach–avoidance test paradigms. Personality is formed through an interaction between genotype and environment. Some important environmental factors that can account for individual differences in behavioral traits are prenatal stress and intrauterine position (in the case of litter-bearing mammals), the mother–young interactions, the social status of the mother, and environmental enrichment. Finally, this chapter discusses which aspects of human mental illness probably do not have homologs in nonhuman animals; these include rumination, anxiety sensitivity, and metacognition. Nevertheless, a body of work indicates that the so-called “big-brained” mammals (great apes, elephants, and dolphins) might have human-like capacities for self-awareness, empathy, metacognition, and perhaps theory of mind.

Given mixed efficacy results of previous cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT) trials and a theoretically driven rationale, an acceptance-based behavior therapy (ABBT) approach was compared to traditional CBT (i.e., Beckian cognitive therapy; CT) for the treatment of test anxiety. In this pilot study, 16 university students with test anxiety were randomly assigned to receive either a CT or ABBT 2-hr group workshop. The two treatments produced markedly different effects on test performance (measured by exam scores), with those receiving ABBT experiencing improvements in performance, whereas those receiving CT exhibited reduced performance. In addition, there was a suggestion that ABBT might have been more effective at reducing subjectively experienced test anxiety (i.e., a nonsignificant but medium-sized group by time interaction effect). Implications of these results for the treatment of test anxiety and for theoretical notions related to cognitive change strategies are discussed.

However, few strategies have been tested that attempt to decrease the stress and anxiety they commonly encounter. OBJECTIVE: To test the feasibility of using mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) techniques to decrease stress and anxiety in caregivers of lung transplant candidates/recipients who required admission to an acute care facility. METHODS: 30 caregivers of lung transplant candidates/recipients were recruited during hospitalization of their significant other. Each completed the perceived stress scale (PSS) and state trait anxiety inventory (STAI) before and 4 weeks after receiving a DVD that demonstrated MBSR techniques. Participants were asked to practice MBSR techniques for 5-15 min a day for 4 weeks. RESULTS: The participants had a mean±SD age of 55.6±13.6 years; 77% of participants were female and 93% Caucasian. The mean PSS and STAI (trait and anxiety) scores of caregivers were higher than population norms pre- and post-intervention. Scores for caregivers who stated they watched the entire DVD and practiced MBSR techniques as requested (n=15) decreased significantly from pre- to post-testing for perceived stress (p=0.001), state anxiety (p=0.003) and trait anxiety (p=0.006). Scores for those who watched some or none of the DVD (n=15) did not change significantly. CONCLUSION: Caregivers can benefit from stress reduction techniques using MBSR.

This critical cultural analysis of trends in the field of social emotional learning (SEL) in the United States considers how ideas concerning emotional skills and competencies have informed programmatic discourse. While currently stressing links between SEL and academic achievement, program literature also places emphasis on ideals of caring, community, and diversity. However, recommended practices across programs tend to undermine these ideals by focusing on emotional and behavioral control strategies that privilege individualist models of self. SEL in practice thus becomes another way to focus attention on measurement and remediation of individual deficits rather than a way to redirect educators' focus toward the relational contexts of classrooms and schools. The promise of SEL to foster increased achievement and equity in American education may not be realized unless more work is done to connect ideals with practices and to address the political and cultural assumptions that are being built into contemporary approaches.
