<p>This paper traces the historical development of the <em>prabhamandala</em>, the back-support consisting of a throne and triumphal arch, on which deities are depicted in paintings and sculptures. From early Indian to later Tibetan examples, the depiction of the prabhamandala underwent successive developments, incorporating different elements and changing stylisticly.
