This article explains how reading certain types of literary fiction can challenge the reader’s expectations and promote development of multiple perspectives through inviting mental exploration. Relevant research displayed that subjects who read literary fiction performed significantly better in detecting emotional states of others from facial expressions or eyes alone, take the perspective of another person with clear understanding, and predict how another may act in a complex scenario - all being necessary skills to develop ToM.
