This article discusses the importance of appropriate social navigation, and shares research findings on the importance of empathy, social perception, and emotional intelligence when reading another’s body language or predicting their current mental state. The article targets findings relevant to literary fiction as a tool used to cultivate increased understanding of another’s mental state and perspective through the act of putting oneself into the character’s position within the story.
