Abstract: (Show)
Effective and culturally appropriate health care options for low-income minority groups in the United States are urgently needed. Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) is an educational intervention in behavioral medicine that is growing in popularity. This chapter is based on our work teaching MBSR to Spanish- and English-speaking inner-city medical patients at the Community Health Center in Meriden, Connecticut (CHC-Meriden). The history, philosophy, and curriculum of this program have been previously described (Roth, 1994; 1997), and research findings have been published elsewhere (Roth & Creaser, 1997; Roth & Stanley, 2002; Roth & Robbins, 2004). This chapter includes four sections: a case study, theoretical framework, literature review, and practical issues for teaching MBSR in an inner-city health care setting.
