This article illustrates the barriers one may experience to communication and closeness when faced with an underdeveloped Theory of Mind, including those with autism, Asperger’s, or mindblindness. This can lead those surrounding the individual to feel a lack of empathy from the individual. However, additional data suggests that those dealing with Asperger syndrome may have the same degree of compassion as anyone else once aware of another’s circumstance or feelings, despite having a reduced ability to initially perceive another’s mental state.
